The worst thing that someone who is suspected of a crime can do is give a statement to the police. Often times the most damning evidence the state has against someone is that person's own statement.
For some reason no matter how many times people are told not to talk with the police most people can not seem to help themselves. If you are suspected of a crime the best thing you can do is exercise your 5th Amendment Right to remain silent or as I like to say "Take the Nickel".
